Before calling a builder, and especially before starting any work on your project, you’re going to want to contact Building Science Group to help maximize your budget for an efficient build timeline with a long term goal of affordability and sustainability.  Our experience, detailed drawings, and high tech equipment can offer detailed information your contractor can follow for best build practices, and energy efficiency results. 

HEATING / COOLING / PURE AIR VENTILATION:  

With rising fuel prices and tax incentives for heat pump mini-splits, heating and cooling companies are in very high demand.  This means their main goal is to sell and install equipment for you.  They will take measurements of your building and size your unit(s).  However, without a Blower Door Test, they could not fully know the cold spots, humid areas, or how many times per hour your building will loose it’s entire volume of conditioned air.  This information is very important information to make sure you are sizing & buying the right equipment.   Without this information, your supplier is guessing what size you might need.  This can be a costly mistake not only in equipment, but also in comfort.  It can also cause high electric bills and/or uncomfortable living conditions.  We take the time and care to understand your building in it’s entirety and then reporting that information back to you.  This way you will have a new understanding of the performance goals for your building.   This is the best information you can pass on to your equipment suppliers and installers, so they can make more knowledgable sizing choices.  

NEW BUILDINGS: 

New York State requires all new buildings to have a blower door test that meets NYS 2020 Energy Code standards.  If you are building new, call BSG BEFORE the drywall is installed.  BSG is here to help contractors & building owners avoid costly alterations and time delays. We can work directly with builders to create an efficiency plan.  BSG’s testing process for new buildings offers a discounted rate to perform numerous tests throughout the build process.  Multiple tests ensures the building will meet or exceed code compliance when complete.  It’s not uncommon for buildings to fail a required blower door test because the architect or builder did not understand what is required to meet the requirements.  We also have extensive knowledge in Passive House Design and requirements since we operate out of one.  

POWER OUTAGES:

For new homes, we have plenty of professional and personal knowledge on solar systems, battery backup,  and Electric Vehicles (EV) in and at the home.  We can help you orient your design to maximize the free energy of the sun casting angles, without overheating the home in Summer and Winter.  

Extreme weather is on the rise which means more disruptions to power and fuel supplies.  The recent rise in power-outages have proven time and again that the buildings without energy efficiency considerations are less adequately equipped to handle disruptions, loss of power, and heating and cooling.  It is not uncommon for less-efficient building to fall below freezing within 24hrs.  An energy efficient building fairs much, much better when the power goes out.  They hold heat much better and longer.  

RISING FUEL PRICES:

Fossil fuels are a limited resource.  Once they are gone, they’re gone.  And they are estimated to be severely depleted within 50yrs. This means no matter what, prices will go one way - up. From our point of view, fossil fuels are a great source of BTU’s.  One of the best.  So why not allow us to help you utilize as much of the BTU’s that you paid for, without wasting them up a chimney.  We are excited to be able to help you save some money and go easier on the atmosphere.
